Do power heads wear out?

i was just put my finger in front of my maxi jet 1200 and it doesnt seem as strong as it once was... do power heads wear out or need to be replaced? iv only head the power heads sice October.

Anything that runs constantly and is electrical can only last so long! Except R2D2.. he is here to stay!

Basically, all that makes a powerhead is an electric motor, a plastic impeller, and rubber seals. Motors usually dont "wear out" but if a motor seal is bad, the motor could be getting rusted. The impeller could be dirty or be broken and a seal could be bad and you are loosing intake or output pressure somewhere.
it is usually very easy to pull the impeller and inspect that and the seals. If they look good then it could be the motor. otherwise could just use some cleaning.

They should be cleaned around once a month.

Mix a solution of vinegar and water in a small pail. I uually use 3 parts water to one part vinegar. Run the powerhead in this soultion for a few hours. My guess is you'll see a marked improvement in the performance. Cleaning them a couple times a year is a good idea.
Be sure to rinse well before placing it back in the main tank. I've had my MJ 1200's for three years and they run like new once cleaned.
