Question I hear Xenia's grow up towards the light, so if I put them at the top will they stay up there or do they also grow 'down' too?
i don't want my tank taken over by xenias, so i'm trying to figure out where to put them so they don't spread like WEEDS lol

Don't put them in, they WILL take over. That being said, I have heard that they only grow up, but I don't trust them. I will never put them in a nano tank. Maybe in a refugium though.

Mine have always grown "UP" rocks (towards the top), and occassionally "SIDEWAYS". But I have personally never had them spread "down".

I have had it in my tank and they grow into or on top anything they touch. I like it a lot in my tank Xenia can tell you a lot about your water. I have found out that as soon as my Xenia close up or start acting funny something funky is going down soon. but get ready to have to trim it back in a month I started with one little frag about a inch tall and now I have about 15-20 stocks in my tank, its a easy way to make cheep money if ur LFS will take it.

Alex,
how do you cut the stalk off the rock without harming the xenia and without leaving any behind ?

Several ways to do this.....
1) Don't cut, but rather "peel" it off
2) Just cut it with a razor blade, but you will have to do it again if it comes back.
3) What I do is just sit a frag rock or something up against one of the big stalks, and within 2-3 days, it moves over on it's own. Then just remove the rock you put in.

technically you can just use scissors and cut a piece inside the tank ive seen it done several times without any problems. However if possible its always best to remove it from the tank. i have a small frag in my tank and its grown since i got it like 3 weeks ago or so but it hasent taken over. Have you thought about letting it grow in the back corner somewhere on the glass? Ive seen that a few times and it looks pretty nice and it doesnt seem to be able to take over there especially since you can easily scrape it off the glass

I have xenia all over my back wall and sides....it grows anyway it wants to. Up, down, left, right, sidways, slantways, backways...and the schnozberries taste like schnozberries.
I go for the "peel" method and yeah you will have to trim it alot. Grows like CRAZY in some tanks and in others dies quickly.
