anyone has a lot of LR still keep bio balls in wet/dry system? my 55g tank has been established well over 2 years, and became a reef tank half year ago. with 60 pounds of LR, 4" of CC, and a protein skimmer, i still don't feel like taking the bioballs out. what about you guys?

I still have mine.I have over 100lbs of LR in my 130,and 80lbs of LS.But I also have a MONSTER skimmer, and an algae refugium to help convert nitrates.I'm sure if I was to loose the balls My 'ates would go below the 15ppm they are now stuck at.But I'm running this as a FOWLR setup.

Hey pikachu
I've been replacing the nasty DSL roll, little by little and have been adding bio balls to my wet dry. I've got a 55 semi reef with pretty good fish load, so I'm keeping them for now. Once all the DSL material has been replaced, I plan to slowly remove bio balls a few at a time over the course of several months. I've got about 60 lbs LR too, and mixed coarse aragonite/sand substrate 2-3 inches.
So far my nitrates are between 5-10.
Plans are to completely remove substrate and go 4 inch live sand/sand/aragonite - but that project has been delayed a couple more months - still researching and reading.
