I recently got a small 2inch gold striped maroon and upon getting it i had heard how agressive they were, which was cool because i always have aggressive fish in my tank, BuT after taking my Tomato clown back for beating up on my maroon, i noticed recently that 1 of my highly territorial little yellow damsels was chasing him! Now he's been in there for a week now, will he toughen up in time as he gets a little bigger, or do i just have a wussy gs maroon on my hands

2 inches is tiny,,,, i have a VERY large GSM and a much smaller (more docile) one also,,, it takes a while and some nerve for them to turn into the large aggressive fish they really are.
believe me,,,, another help could be a anemone,, now my little gsm chills out outside of his cave in his anemone all day, and doesnt care about the 4 triggers swimming by him....

Who knows? IMO, its impossible to predict how an individual fish will act, but most maroons become very territorial. Your damsels may well eliminate the clown before he grows much; those little monsters are going to dictate everything you can do with your tank for as long as you have them.

They are agressive but they have their limits. My GSM used to harass the niger trigger all the time. Then the Niger got bigger and got his revenge. The GSM was pretty much ripped to pieces. I had to move the GSM pair to another tank and with time they healed. But even though these are agressive fish, there other more agressive ones out there.

I think you're describing a very territorial, rather than an aggressive fish and I agree that the maroon fits the "territorial" category. However, a mature maroon will often consider the entire tank her territory and will defend it against all new fish. A "time-out" works well with these guys; if you find its impossible to add any fish to a tank with an established maroon.
