Does anyone else have problems with people using their credit cards?

I have had to replace my credit card twice in 4 months and I have no idea how they get my number. I have one visa that I only use when they don't take Amex. I have only used it a few times and it has never been out of my site. I get a call tonight from Fraud protection to confirm two suspicious looking charges. Someone tried to use my card at a Best Buy and Home Depot. So, I have to cancel the card again and wait for a new one. How in the heck can someone try to use my card in a Home Depot when I have it in my wallet?
It's not that big of a deal as I have never had to pay for anything but just an inconvenience and the fact someone is using my name.
So, how many of you have had this happen? In talking to friends, it seems pretty common. You know, if they shot people for this, it would greatly reduce the problem.

Never had a problem with fraud, but identity theft is the fastest growing scheme in the nation, those pocket scanners are the big culprit, usually happen in restaurants when the card is out of your sight, then these numbers are sole on the black market..

I have a friend who works in digital forensics, and he said, they just caught some guys who cracked the credit card number generator. So those numbers were stolen before they were even activated. Now if only these morons would do an honest days work. Friggen smart people not smart enough to work.

Well, for future use, look into LIFE LOCK. It protects your identity.

Are you sure they tried to use it at the actual store or did they try to use it online? If it was online they don't need the card just the info. There are crooks out there clever enough to have special equiptment that can see your pin number while you're at an ATM and they're sitting in their car. Gotta love technology sometimes.

No, they just said Home Depot and BBY and I just associate Home Depot as being brick and mortar. It was probably online. I started keeping a fraud alert on my credit reports just in case. I'm thinking it's almost worth paying for the protection plans.

those stores online though require the CID number, which is not part of the number generator, nor is it anywhere other than ON the card and in visa's database.
hate to ask, but do you have any kids?

If the card was used on the online stores, they could have gotten their hands on your credit card statement(s) and those have the credit card number, but not the expiration or CVV2 number. Then all they need to do in the online store is try out month/year combinations until they find the right one. The online store application in most cases doesn't not count how many times a single card is tested with and some stores do not require you to enter the CVV2 number.
I build online eCommerce apps for a living and I see some really badly built stores all the time. Both Visa and Mastercard has requested that CVV2 number is required at the transaction but a lot of online vendors still don't have that in place.

I would look into LIFE LOCK for the future. In case your SS is ever used to lets say fill out an application for a CC or a loan or for anything for that matter, you are called before the process can be complete. They call you and halt the whole process until YOU respond.

lol how do you keep getting accounts?
Not to take away from this thread but, they just dont want me in here because I am competitor. Its not like I come in here starting threads saying visit me, visit me. For the most part, I have been in here giving advice. Either way, I have read their FORUM RULES upon signing up and no where does it say that anyone that owns or works for a business in this field is NOT allowed to be a member. Scott doesnt want me in here and all the mods have to listen to Scott. He has no legitimate complaint. I have broken NO LAWS by being in here nor by continuing to return.
Okay back to original thread.......

after working in a bank i have to say that's a very serious and scary ordeal that you're going through! if i were you, i'd have a credit report pulled to ensure that it's just your credit card number and not your social security number that was compromised...

I worked retail (and I know most info passed along was 2nd hand and they would lie to get us to do stuff) but they used to say that VISA/Mastercard, would not pay if the card was run twice, if the first time it was declined and approved the second time.

I haven't been ID theived, yet.
Just got a letter from a soon to be ex brokerage house telling us someone hacked their system and got all our account info including my Social Security number.
Got 2 things working in my favor. This was a leftover account so there wasn't much in there, Just one mutal fund. Second is I use my Social Security number on all our stuff. I haven't worked since 2000 so it's pretty hard to get a decent credit limit. Time will tell.

Your identity can get stolen anywhere these days. One of my cousins had her identity stolen while she was in the hospital having her baby by one of the nurses that took care of her. I guess some people just have no morals. She had no idea until she tried to get a loan for something and got denied for bad credit. In her case they were able to track down the lady and she was arrested but alot of these criminals get away with it and move on to the next victim. I would definitely get a copy of you credit report. If you call one of the credit reporting agencies and tell them what happened they will usually send you a copy for free.

No, my 5 year old little girl doesn't need anything from Best Buy and my son is grown and doesn't live with me. No way he would have access to my wallet when I see him and he knows if he need anything all he has to do is ask. Who knows how this happens. I hadn't used that credit card in over a month before the day the charges hit.

Forget high tech, think about all the people who have access to your card. Every time you use it you hand it to someone else, watch the times it goes below a counter or he sets it down on something. Or you go to out to eat. If they had you a reciept to sign, look to see if you number is one it. If they type a number into the computer and it isn't a dedicated POS (point of sale) machine, they could be typing it into a field and writing it down later. I used to work at RadioShack, and every time someone used a credit card it printed 2 reciepts, one was our copy, that copy had your number on it with your experation date. And i was required to type in your little number on the back of the card. It was a windows based POS system where I could have EASILY typed in the little number on the back. Heck it is only 3 letters I could have memorized it then wrote it down later. The credit card reciepts were not locked up, and I could reprint your reciept later and see your card number with no record of the reprint. I could go into the files and get the first reciept and no one would have noticed. Most of the time your credit card number at a store is not nearly as secure as it should be. And all it takes is ONE person with bad intentions (and retail employees are retail for a reason that job sucks) to get your stuff stolen. If it had happened more than once, maybe you're dealing with the same person stealing different cards...
(as a disclaimer Radioshack has since fixed alot of their security risks) But just last year...
