So I was window shopping Sat and saw a Harlequin Tusk for the first time... OMG what a beautiful fish. I did not buy it but admired it from a distance. The LFS wanted 39.00 and it was a nice size. I never buy anything without knowing what it is and what it needs. I'm moving and want to set up an agressive tank once I get settled. So if you have info, knowledge, story or
objection, please share...

here is mine. They "are" beautiful. Mine was pretty cool too. He would swim upside down and everything. Unfortunately "Piccaso Trigger happened".

When he was still in the bag.
I really didn't have him long enough to even tell a story. sorry.

Make sure it's not an Info-Pacific Tusk too. They're are primarily cyanide caught. It'll last for a month or so and die, without reason.
IMHO, if you're gonna get one...pay a little extra and get an Australian Tusk. They're not cyanide caught and it'll be a great addition to your tank...as long as it's 90gal.+.
I had a show size Aussie Tusk on order, last week and it didnt come in . I was VERY disapointed. They didnt have any this week, so I order in a large Niger Trigger and a large Red Coris Wrasee.
Dont get one, unless it's guaranteed Australian.

Is there a visual difference between the Indo-Pacific and Aussie? What if any tank mates would you recommend?

Indo's have orange stripes, with a green tint to their body.
Aussies have red stripes, with a blue tint to their body...and, have a red stripe on their tail.
It's hard to tell the difference, as juveniles, but if you pay close attention, it can be done.

Wrasses are more sensitive to chemicals than most fish. If a store has an Australian one, they will generally put it right on the sign. The same goes for any Hawaiin, tank bred or raised, or any sustainably collected livestock.
Heres an Australian one

and here an Indonesian one

I know aussies colors in general are much more vivid than indo's but it's their blue on teeth and running down their body which distinguish them from indo's but I could be wrong.

I went back yesterday, and they have alot of blue, and are very bright colored? The LFS didnt know if they were Indo or Aussie.. They are still very pretty, but I'll wait to learn more... When you say they are sensetive to chemicals are you talking about medications, additives??

If that is the case then I personally doubt its an Aussie. $39 is quite cheap for this fish, especially one of "nice size." I have never seen any of my LFSs have an Indo HT for less than about $70, and the Indos are normally cheaper than the Aussies. I've had a hard time finding even a very small sized Aussie specimen for less than $100. But maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places, or I'm unlucky
.

Be sure to purchase an Australian Tusk, that is key to whether or not your fish lives.
The australian caught tusks have deeper brighter blue stripes. I love my tusk, I have him I think about 6 months. He is a cool dude.

I have read that they are not reef safe, they will pick at soft corals.
I feed mine a meaty based diet of diced pieces of raw shrimp, flake, mysid shrimp and the like. They are not picky eaters. I enjoy my Tusk. Gorgeous fish.
Don't get alarmed when they rest or nap though. They do rest and lay on their sides and you get scared at first thinking they are not well. I have learned from owning a few fish now from the wrasse family, that they look like birds when they swim with the motions of their pectoral fins, and they rest laying on their side. All very wrasse.
