Does anyone use a tap water filter instead of R/O?

I have used these before and I love them. Works well. You just do not get many gallons out of them before you have to switch the cartridge. You will get many more out of an RO unit. For a smaller tank though, the tap water filter works well.

the one I am looking at cleans 25,000 gals. and the water flows quickly through it.
it also says it gets out heavy metals, which is what's making me consider it. my tap doesn't have any chlorine and i could let it burn off overnight anyway.....
still in the planning stages tho

It is roughly 60 to 120 gph, i think you can very a ro/di unit to handle the same amount of water a little cheaper. Just a thought.

In the long run an RO/DI unit is better, less maintenance, better water quality.... From what I've heard the tap conditioner filters need replacing very often depending on how clean the tap water is...

I would prefer an RO filter, but for now, I prefer not to spend the money, since I have this free.
I am trying to figure out the phosphate situation so that I know if it is possible to grow coraline algae.
