Does being a good person matter anymore?

Just curious what the thoughts are.
Do you think you're a good person? (Help those in need, no intentional rudeness, consideration for your surroundings)
Do you see any kind of external benefits from being a good person?
Now I know most people won't have the thought process to know they're not a good person, if that is in fact what they are. But to those that know or think they could/should be a better person do you see any kind of external benefits?

I think that with most people that can see it in someone, then they will like or respect you more for it.....and then there are those that will try to take advantage also and also resent you because of it....and then theres THOSE that think they are better than others.....not in the meaning of being gooder though...haha

i'm a very good person. i don't care who the hey you are i will help you. i think i'm the worst when i consider my own self. i'm all reaction though, so that only happens occasionally. training.
i wouldn't hesitate to give my life saving someone unless it's a fire situation.

i gotta admit, i am often not a good person, lately i have been trying to be better. i give respect when it is due, but you have to earn my respect.
i do not help people when they can do it themselves, i believe what does not kill you makes you stronger.
i am rude when somebody deserves it, i am shot tempered, and i'm often rude to people.
i do however care about my surroundings, like i have good language around children and elderly, don't do anything stupid or dangerous to show a bad example.
lately i've noticed this, and have tried to be better, and it is showing, i've noticed i am more easy to be around, social life is busier than ever, i'd recomend it, lol
i've been learning about my wrong ways through my church,
and yes, being a good person does matter!

Sometimes being nice and/or caring about others is not a good thing. Many folks will view this as a weakness and take advantage.
However, if you wake up each day...feeling good about what you have done......great.

I guess I like to think I'm good! I hope others see me that way...

Sadly, when I'm a nice guy I don't get nearly as far, or even what I want. There's a place for everything though, in my marriage being brunt and short doesn't really do me any favors. However, business is just that, business, and if you don't go for what you want, you'll get ignored.
Skipper- I hear ya, I'm at work too.

so, you're saying good people aren't assertive? why does one have to be a weak pushover to be good?

I think the majority of people where I live are good people. It's unfortunate that so many of us focus on just the bad things. Everyone has bad mornings, gets stuck behind a slow person on the way to work and swears out loud. It doesn't mean we are bad people.
To take it on a more patriotic level, I think America is a good nation. The world is so obsessed lately with the "good fight" and smearing the USA. The fact is that America gives about 3 times the amount of charity than the rest of the world COMBINED.

I don't think being a good person by helping someone out has so much to do with what other people see you do or hear you do as what you get from it. If i do the right thing or help someone in need I don't really care who notices. I just hope that in the end I can feel like I've done enough good to make up for the days when I was rude or in a bad mood and didn't help when I could have. And typically when someone is rude to me I let it go and know that Karma has a way of dealing with those people. Now on the other hand I don't take it so well when someone is rude to my wife. Not sure what the difference is, but if someone's rude to her I'm not so nice anymore.
