Does it NEED to be cure

I am going to buy some live rock from a FS in Charlotte NC... I live about 45 minutes away from this store but i need to know whether or not it needs to be cured if its only going to be out for 45 min- 1 hr... would it be ok if i put it straight into my tank... will i have any levels go up?? Also will be putting in live sand.

Saul T. Waters,
Where do you live? I'm about 1 hour from charlotte also. What is the name of the LFS and how much is their live rock? I'd like to check it out. I always go to The World of Pets in Greenville, SC.

I live about 10 minutes from my lfs, but most of the time i get home in about a 1/2 hour.....they told me as long as it is wrapped in a paper bag, newspaper, etc. it should be ok.....just in my experience it has been ok that long :)

I live in statesville NC near Mooresville... this week end Fintastic on south blvd. is having a 10th anniversary sale so the live rock is 4.99lb... usually about $8

My LFS puts each rock in a large plastic bag with some SW from the tank, secures the bag with a rubberband and them puts the rock in a styrofoam box for me and I live 15 minutes from the store.
If I pay $50 for a fish they do that...why not for a $50 piece of LR!
If you ask they might do that for you too, since you live a ways from them. The worst they could say is no.
You also might want to think about taking a rubbermaid tub with SW yourself to carry it home in. HTH

Hey guys here a idea for you! Have you ever laid newspaper down on a floor or something to dry up a spill? When you pull up the paper you can see the print from the paper, or the ink still on the floor! This is why I have my lfs wrap my lr in one or two of those thicker plastic bags and then put it in another with some water. I don't know if the newpaper ink is harmful to the lr but i would want that in any of my reef tanks, would you! ;)

Hey Guys,
Its not just the ink and dye off you need to worry about,
You also need to think about any hitch hikers that come on those LR pcs..
I take each and every pcs of mine, and do a freshwater "dip"/"wash"..
You really dont want to end up with anything bad in your tank/like a mantis...
Compared to the time it takes to do that now, is nothing compared to what its going to take in time and money if you get one of those suckers, plus tearing apart your tank to get at it..
I even "wash" polyps on rocks, shrooms on rocks, anything on LR..
The thought of a Mantis Shrimp eating or breaking my glass tank scares me enough into taking just alittle more time before I put any LR in the tank..
Plus you dont normally know how long the LR at a pet store has been there, and has really been cycled properly...Remember, most LFS that are not by the beach/shore...have their LR sent to them in large quantities out of water/which means die off..Or, it is brought in as a trade from someone elses tank...
I just dont take the chance..
Just my 2 cents..
~Susie ;)
