Does lighting matter for tanks and fish

I got a tank for christmas last year and i have never changed the light on it is it bad for my fishor alge groth with wrong lighting???

algea growth may increase as the spectrum changes over time
but for fish only you should be ok if you notice lots of algae change them
reef tank huge differance
I have Mh lights and change them at least every 10 months and as little as 6monthsdepends on funds

if you have fish only its not a big deal. and if you do change your lights be prepared for an algae bloom
