Does LR/LS need light?

I am not concerned about the appearence of the LS/LR, just its ability to work as a biological filter. Or if LR requires light, would LS alone require light? I plan on using LR rubble, LS, and caulpera in my sump, and I am still trying to determine my lighting requirements. I have read articles suggesting LR/LS does not need light, but have heard otherwise from this board.
I have read from different sources that I can use normal "grow lights" for the caulpera, but I will hang flos over the sump if necessary.
Thanks.

You WILL need light for the algae.Regular flo's will do fine for this. I would also suggest leaving the lights on 24hours a day. One of the benafits of this will be that at night when your tank lights are off your ph rises.By leaving the algae lights ON,it will counter this rise in ph.And also promote more photosenthasis(sp?) in the algae.

Live rock really does not need light to function. Also some purple algae grows well without light. But as Salty said you will need light for your caulpera.
