does my skimmer setup sound ok?

my sump has 3 sections,water dumps into middle section directly above my oceanrunner needlewheel skimmer pump. skimmer is built into right section,drains back into middle,goes thru sponge and back to return.
Is it ok to have the pump directly under all that turbulence and bubbles?
I get about a cupful ok gunk every 3-4 days. tank is 120 gallons with a dozen or so fish.

might want to frequently clean that sponge with chlorinated FW (then dunk once rung out into premixed declornater filled salt) if your nitrates go to unpleasant levels. IF it works dun mess with it.
