Dogface Puffer feeding

I just acquired a 4-5" dog-faced puffer. How much should I feed him?
If it were up to him I would have to feed him every time I walked up to his aquarium. I'm currently feeding him Krill. Maybe 2-3 krill a day.

Don't feed your puffer krill. And 2 or 3 a day isn't nearly enough. a 4-5 inch dog face is going through it main growth spurt. You need to vary its diet. I'd recomend going to the seafood market. Pick up a bunch of inverts, squid, octopus, shrimp, some sort of bivalves, (mine loved oysters), a non-oily fish. Cut it into smaller pieces, soak it in vitamines, cut up a garlic, freeze it all, then feed him chunks of it. Or if you want, defrost it in some tank water or ro water and soak it in vitamines then, and feed him. I'd also feed him fresh oysters or shrimp on the side too.
This fish isn't just a flakes, pellets type of fish. To be really healthy they need lots of different types of food. and just feeding krill can lead to some serious problems like lockjaw, and blindness...

ok - silly question. When you feed with fresh mussel / clam / oyster, so you put it in the tank with 1/2 the shell? What about the shrimp? I was thinking about getting a toby puffer.

tobys are a little different ball game, but yes on the 1/2 shell works. When df's get big enough they'll start crushing clams with their beak...

Thanks, this is the exact info I was looking for. But how much food and how many times a day do you feed him?

At this side, I'd feed him as much as he'll eat in a few minutes. I fed mine once a day. What is your total fish load right now?
