Drain to refugium section?

I have split my main drain from the DT to go to both the skimmer section and the refugium. Flow is controlled by ball valves on both sides and isolated by unions. The refugium line will drain into a rubble tower. Should I extend the line to the bottom of the tower and drill the line below the water surface, or should I cut the line off just above the surface?

go below water and drill holes for air pressure to excape. I did mine at the water surface and it was load. Switch the pipes and drilled holes, quite then my skimmers feed pump.
JMO.

Thanks. That's what I ended up doing. The tale will be told tomorrow night when it gets filled as I had already drained the test water before I changed the drain. Oh well, with unions I can change again if need be, but I think it will work.
Thanks again.
