drilling a tank for a canister filter

I am ordering a tank off of a website and having it custom drilled.(It's acrylic).
My question is I have an Ocean Clear canister filter and a water pump. Am I stuck with drilling the bottom of the tank? Or am I better off selling the filter and going with and overflow built in? I've always had visible plumbing on my tanks, so this is going to be a "first" as far as drilling and plumbing. What goes on the bottom of the tank as far as substrate? CC or can sand be used?? It will be a FOWLR tank. How many holes need to be drilled?

I havent seen anything on canister filters-it's about 9 years old, but like brand new, so if I dont need to invest in something else, I'd like to figure out a way to use it. Advice apprecited.

I dont know you would have to ask my dad. He has a 120-it is not in use and i am working on building it in my closet--long story. But it has 2 holes drilled in the bottom of it for filters and to release the water when changing water. It is an old tank and is like a 1" thick he use the holes for his filters I dont know how he like it (i am 13 and when he had it set up i was 3 to 4 years old) but his tank was always sparking.Oh and the things on the bottom -it was freshwater- he had CC but below it he had those simply plastic gravel filters that are black to keep the CC from going into the filter and when he didnt use the holes he had a plug that fit in the hole so it wouldnt leak,But it was unfortant that sense his tanks was like 5 or 6years from when he brought so it is really old now but anyway I might be able to get more info from he but he is busy!
