drilling holes in bottom of tank

not if done properly. there's a youtube video for making a sump that shows how to do it safely. just search on that topic over there

The bottom of a glass fish tank is made of tempered glass & I'm pretty sure you can't drill tempered.
 
thats what i thought also about the tempered glass but i have read a couple of times on this forum about people doing this and being succesful. Ill check out that web site and hopefully get some ideas

Not tempered.
You can drill other sides of the tank but you cannot drill tempered glass.
If the bottom isn't tempered, then it isn't an issue

once glass has been tempered, there is no drilling it. aquariums with drilled bottoms were drilled before being tempered. usually the sides of the tank are not tempered glass, and you can drill those with bits like the ones they sell at glass-holes.com. there are threads on this board regarding builds that involved drilling tanks. search for:
