Drip Acclimation

I have always drip acclimated all my live stock. But now I wonder... why? The point of dripping is to match Specific Gravity, right? So if you test the SG of both the tank water, and the LFS water and they either match or are very very close, a 3 hour drip isn't necessary? Inverts for some reason to me still should be acclimated for a few hours, but I don't think it's really that necessary for fish unless the SG of the two waters is very different.
However, I'm sure when fish are shipped to your door from an online retailer the bag could have high levels of ammonia in it. Can a sudden DROP in ammonia be dangerous to fish? I don't see why it would be... anyone?

Well I would drip everything for the recommended time. It can't hurt for one thing and you paid good money for them. Also, I know that pH drops can be devestating to fish as well as alkalinity. I suppose that if everything matched, then you wouldn't need to. But just to be safe, I do it anyway.

I have had 16 or so saltwater fish and have never "drip acclimated" the way this sight so simply explains. I put the bag in the water for about 20min and about half way through, I cut/poke holes in the bag to allow the water to mix. It works like a dream, and does not stress the fish like throwing them in a styrofoam box for 8 hours.

of course, but I have never ordered, always LFS. Quite frankly, I am still skeptical about ordering a fish online.

Only problem with this I see is I don't want my LFS' dirty stank water in my tank.

IMO, ordering fish online is probably cutting half the stress out of their lives.
