Can you make your DSB to deep? I got some sand to put in my new fuge, but got more then enough for 4", should I put it all in there? It will probably make it about 7-8", is this good for the tank, or will it hurt it?

I think I remember reading that the deeper the sand bed, the more beneficial it is. Of course, you dont want to take up too much room in your tank so it must be designed accordingly. But, I am assuming, after reading that, deeper sand beds more mimick the real ocean. So......... good luck. where's bang? He will know for sure.

I would say a bed that deep would have a good chance at anoxic areas, and hydrogen sulfide production........this isn't a bad thing as long as the sand is not disturbed....no DSB should be disturbed anyway. I have heard of places using 21 inch deep beds, and I believe you will be fine. You will want ALOT of sandbed critters.....especially worms.:) The nitrates don't crawl themselves down to the anaerobic bacteria, so worms and such do that job. Something worth noting.....if you ever decide to remove the deep bed......get advice for sure at that point....hydrogen sulfide is strong stuff. 7-8 inches is fine in my book, and actually the common 4 inches seems too shallow to me.
