My tank is set up with a dsb now but i keep reading and alluva sudden it seems like dsb crash after 5 yrs. what would cause this and should i convert to a bare bottom. My problem is that i dont have a sump cuz my tank isnt drilled so just using new sand in a refugium wouldnt work. Ideas?

Five years is REALLY along time to me atleast.... I don't see it really being a problem replacing some of the sand ever couple of years. Which is what I plan on doing.

Five Years may be 1/4 of your life and seem like a long time...:)
But it's only 1/9 of mine... :D
and I sure hope to have my tank set up and successfull longer than that...
I'll stick with a SSB (shallow sand bed)...and a sump and fuge...>>>>>JMHO<<<<<

I just removed 3 in of cc this past month. I will be getting the last cup of stray cc out today with a 10% water change. I was tired of battling phosphates and diatom outbreaks. I intend to incorp a closed loop systme that will keep the bottom of the tank spotless. There is a LFS that has two incrediable 220g reef displays set up that are prestine. I have been studing there setup and will hopefully duplicate it. I have heard a lot of negative talk about the long term reality of a DSB. But I have NO personal experience. Good luck!
