i have 30lbs cc in my 75gal tank. i thought when there was a lot of bacteria it would keep the ammonia and nitrates down. who has had cc and swapped to dsb. what is the benefits of dsb?
Thanks

Well you and I are in the minority with cc. Almost everyone I know has sand. However I have been running cc for years now and my nitrates never get above the 3-5 range. I realize that there are other reasons for a dsb ( critters and what not ) but I have had luck with cc and switching would be out of the question for me. just vacumm when you do water changes and you shouldn't have any problems. just my .02 but I am sure you will get other's who swear by dsb. Like I said it has worked for me, but in retrospect i would have gone with a dsb - but back then I didn't know of anyone who did it.

when we started, we had cc and a ugf, but switched, that was the only nuisance(the switch)
now, our latest tank, has a dsb and lr, all we use is circulation, and small water changes, no vaccuuming, no skimming and no filtering(only for circ, and occassional carbon)
nitrates are nearing 10, in a 4 month young tank, and naturally
all other parameters are doing good also
and we are growing polyps and feather dusters, which we did not add, so must be doing something right, even though we are doing almost nothing

My mistake was starting with FO tank using CC. the cc captures and traps the ditritous material where vacuuming didn't seem to help. I have a DSB now and my nitrates are more manageable. Beside the options for animals is greater with LS (blennys, goby's, tunneling crabs) and the bottom seems to stay cleaner longer.
