DT's Expiration Dates

Is it ok to use DT's after the exp. date? I have a medium bottle that is only half gone, but the exp. date is 1/15/04. Can I still use it after that date or should I toss it?

I think I remember someone saying that when it goes bad it smells terrible. I keep using my bottle that is out of date too. I take a sniff before I use it. I haven't seen any ill effects yet.
Let's see what the others think

I was thinking along the same lines . . . I will probably use it until it makes me vomit . . . or its gone.
Unless someone can give me a reason otherwise.

throw it. buy some fresh stuff. It's pretty much dead by that point.

Ok heres the deal it is dead by now so all you will be doing is adding phosphates to your tank to fuel hair algae toss the crap out.

On their web site they say that it is good for 6 months. The date on the bottle is one month before the actual expiration date, six months after packaging.

The expiration date is pretty vague really. I personally don't use phytoplankton that's been sitting around for more than a few weeks.
The minute it's harvested it starts to die. Putting it in cold conditions slows this process.
In the case of DT's, it was probably chilled at the DT's warehouse, put in a box and shipped the cheapest way possible to a wholesaler (not refrigerated). Then, it probably sits for a while there (probably not refrigerated), before it's then shipped to the retailer slowly and sits a the doorstep of your local LFS. Then in turn I'm sure make it their upmost priority to load it into their refrigerator.
At which point, it sits, not being shaken, for a few months.
Then you take it home in your hot car and throw it in your cold fridge.
At what point are you expecting the majority of these die? During the shipping process I wager...
That's why I grow my own.

conditions? lots of light, circulation in the form of large bubbles, a starter culture: either another person's phyto - (NOT DT's) or a commercially available culture, and a fertilizer - also commercially available.
That's the basic premise. Getting it set up is pretty easy, getting it going is too... Getting it to be as concentrated or more concentrated than DT's is incredibly difficult - but with the right time and effort, it's possible...:D
