yes you can use playsand and then get maybe 2 bags of LS. Dump it in and soon the playsand will become live sand

Welcome to the boards.
Do a search on this forum for "southdown". It's a type of playsand. It's now known as Oldcastle or Yardright.
I used a truckload of southdown for my 210 gallon. I've got a 6 inch deep sand bed. Having said that, however, some people don't like it. Playsand is more fine than other sand typically. It also will take a couple of days to settle. Fish like gobies and jawfish love to play in it; which results in having to periodically clean off corals caught in the festivities.
Not all play sand is equal. You will get the best results from using 100% aragonite sand.
Also do a search for "crushed coral". you'll see two very different opinions on it as well. I'm of the opinion crushed coral is from the devil.

I think Yardrite or Yardright is another brand of cheap aragonite sand. Regular, non-aragonite sand can work, but it will not buffer your water or contribute beneficial trace elements like aragonite will.
