Some people run actinic lights then put their lights on full strength for a few hours then the actinics then moonlights. I put my actinics on for 2 hours then my halides for 6 then actinics then moonlights.
Then there are those of us with LED lighting that do have a dimmer set up on a controller. My blue lights fade on in the morning and are on for about 2 hours, then the whites fade on and at night the whites fade out first, then blue.

I will be coming over to the LED dark side very soon.
I'll be coming to the LED light side soon as well.
I use two timers on my tank. Actinic T5's come on an hour before my whites, and turn off an hour after my whites go off. That's about as dusk/dawn as I get.
Metal halides have "warm up" times... where the ballast and bulbs have to "warm up" before the bulb turns on to full brightness...
