can dwarf angels be kept in a 55g. If so are they reef safe? From what I've read it appears they may nip away at reefs?

I've kept both a Potter's angel and a Brazillian Flameback in reefs (not together though), and both have been great. They are both in mixed LPS, SPS, softie tanks with clams and have never bothered a thing. I've met a few people who've had problems with them, but it seems to depend more on the personality of individual fish more than anything else.

yosemete sam, is that a fathead anthias in your avatar? is that a pic of your tank? if so could you please share how you take care of this beautiful fish? (what do you feed, how is your aquascape, lighting, is it shy, tankmates, how long youve had it, etc?) I love those fish!

a 55 gallon is a nice size tank to keep a dwarf angel, but some angels get bigger that others.
a dwarf flame angel is reef safe and only grows to about 4 inches.
