Hi:
if it looks like its dying pull it out before it fouls the tank. Actually i was going to say just the opposite of Kev. These pretty red, organge yellow sponges are poor choices for the home aquarium.
why you ask
1)- they require laminar flows of water , 2) they feed on bacteria and its unclear really what bacteria they feed on, 3) they have to be kept in dim lighting as algae will grow on them and kill off the organsism, and 4) once they are xposed to air that portion of the sponge will start dying off.
So while they last for 4-6 month in the aquarium they are starving away
pull the dyin sponge out
