Easiest and safest way to frag a shroom.

i have a nice red/purple mushroom that ive had for abot 3-4 months and it is doing great ive noticed alot of growth and i wanted to frag it, but i have never fraged a coral before so im kinda afraid, cuz i dont want to end up killing my mushroom. so wat are a couple easy and safe ways to frag a mushroom coral?

let it split on it's own? if you want to frag, cut the top off. The left behind stalk should grow a new head. Take a shallow dish and some piece of mesh. put some rubble in the dish, put the top of the shroom in there, put the mesh over the dish and secure it with a rubber band. put it in the tank where there is very low flow. the head should attach to a piece of rubble in a few days, after that you can move it where you want it. This would probably be the least risk of loosing your shroom.

or you can take a razor blade and cut it in half(thru the mouth) and you will have 2 or continue on and cut the other way too and have 4 (but to me that get's a little messy)

well i want to frag it. so do i have to take it out of the water to cut the head of? or can i just do it while it is in the tank?

Take it out to cut it. It is very slimy and it cuts like tough meat, use a new razor blade, then do like said with mesh and low flow.

Whenever you frag anything it is best to remove the "parent" from your display. Mushroom and leathers can quicky kill your reef if fragged when still in the display because of the toxins they release when cut. I move the coral to a large bowl with tank water and frag in there. I then transfer the newly cut frags to another bowl and let sit a few minutes before glueing or meshing them to rubble or a plug. all bowl water is discarded after I am done placing the new frags in my frag tank.

well i took the rock w/ the shroom on it out and fragged it then put the head back in the tank, then got rid of the bowl water.then put the rok back in the tank. do u think im safe or am i going to run into some trouble?

I think you should let it do it on its own. I bought 1 mushroom and it then got very large and it eventually grew more mushrooms from its base. I went from 1 to 10 in a very short time, once the first one started the rest followed.

yea i didnt want to risk fragging my bigger one so i frag the smaller one i got for free on a piece of LR. ill let the big one split on its own.

Once it started .. seems like new ones are popping up often lol. It got bigger and bigger before it grew the other ones off of its base.
