i have an eheim 2213, and it has worked better than i thought it would. It is completely silent, doesnt make a sound. I think it is just too small for my 60 gallon, even though its rated for 65 gallons.
i would recommend using a sump though, even though the eheim works well, i would much rather have a sump knowing what i do now about reef tanks.
About the cleaning, you just close the intake line, let it run for 3 seconds to drain water, then turn off filter, then close outgoing line. the media is in a seperate canister and you just remove it and change the media, VERY EASY!!!

How do you close off an intake line without getting it filled up with air? Do you not remove it from the water?

Their called double disconnect valves, they work amazing!!! Just google that.
They have two things that close the valve on each side, and it helps make maintanence easy!

their extremely easy to use, and they make maintenance so easy because you dont have to worry about spilling water, and theres 2 valves to close on each one, which spills even less water.

I have a three or four week old fluval fx5 for sale and its super easy to clean you simply pull the basket out with its handles and rinse done.
pm me if interested. I used the fluval for a couple weeks and then decided i wanted a sump/refuge.

I have an Eheim 2028 Pro II canister and it is by far the best canister I have ever used. It has a lever on the top that closes both the intake and output lines and disconnects them. The media is contained in three seperate baskets with handles with a coarse foam pad on the bottom basket and a fine foam pad on the top basket. I run carbon in a filter sock in the top basket. To clean it I just close the valve and disconnect the hoses, take the top off and remove each of the baskets and rinse them, then either rinse or replace the foam and then put it back together. Hook the hoses back up and plug it back in and I am done.

That is the way the fluval is except it has pads on the outer rings of the three baskets. I use the ceraminc in the top with some black diamond the middle chemi pure and more black diamond and the bottom is ceraminc the top one is the small rings the bottom is the large ones. I like it but no use to have it when I have a 55 gal sump under it as well...
