Easy way to clean a sump?

So,...
Some people don't use mechanical filtration before water enters their sump. This lets detritus settle in the sump. However, it's not that easy to get detritus out of the sump because you can't start a siphon. I have used a small submersible pump attached to a vinyl hose to pump out all the detritus before. I've used a turkey baster and that takes a lot of time and patience. So, does anyone else have an easy way to siphon out / clean out the sump?
I have just recently decided to use mechanical filtration in my aquarium. I will keep using mechanical filtration and keep it washed and changed regularly. Is there any easier way to remove the detritus out of the sump?

A wet/dry shop vac seems like a good idea. A bit drastic... but a good idea.
I guess if you ever had to remove a deep sand bed that would be the way to go. lol
I guess a 5 or 10g shop vac might be in my future. LOL

Ive seen some at garage sales. I used to have a 10g when I owned a fish store. Sold it off though. Oops.
Any other ideas and suggestions?
