Eclipse 3 - Pump

I have an Eclipse 3 on a 37 gallon tank. The original pump was replaced by Marineland and the new pump is pumping more water than can pass through the filter and on to the biowheel - a lot of water just goes over the filter and on to the biowheel chamber. I have replaced the filter cartridge, stretched the filter floss and even punched holes in the bottom of the filter cartridge to see if these actions would increase the flow through the filter.
I know too much water flow is normally not a concern to aquarists but in this case it seems to be causing the water to bypass the filter. Anyone else have the same probem? Any know solutions?
Thanks!

I have a couple of small Eclipse tanks (3-gallons) housing bettas right now. I've had similar problems (that came and went on their own), but a temporary solution that I used was to put some sponge filter into the uptake tube, hence slowing water flow. Might work until you figure out something more permanent.

Thanks Misty, you are right, that would be a temporary solution since the little foam would be getting plugged up.
Anyone else have the same problem?
