I've got a 10 gallon hex that could hold an eclipse hex hood. Also an undergravel filter i'd like to try with it(I'm almost afraid to mention a UG). They make a hex 5 and a 7. Now I know neither of those numbers equal 10, but I want to put plenty of live rock in and the powerhead should prevent thermal layering.
maybe one fish, maybe just inverts.

Stay as far away from undergravel filters as you can. As for the Eclipse hood, I suppose it would work. It will certainly move water and provide light, and since you'll be adding live rock you wont really be depending on it for biological filtration. I say, what hell, try it out.

Is there anything i can do to increase the performance for this hood? and what should i do with the powerhead that wont suck up fish?

I don't think there's any way to easily increase the performance of the hood, though it's not something that I've ever looked into. As for your powerhead sucking up fish, as far as I know they usually come with some sort of screen attachment.

Ok. I won't use the UG. I will save money to upgrade to a canister or something and until then I will only have a cleanup crew or if that is unwise I will watch water move through my tank. I'm much more patient than I am wealthy. But I still have/can have the money to do this right and with as few deaths as possible, my goal being 0.
