My new Zebra shows signs of being hungry at feeding time. Comes up an grabs the silversides off a feeding stick and then drops it after a few seconds. At first I thought maybe they were to big for him so I tried cutting smaller pieces and am getting the same result. Please help with any advise.

Go to the grocery store and buy a bag of frozen shrimp. Thats what i feed my eel. Just thaw the pieces out in a glass of water in the micowave.

What size shrimp are you getting and are you feeding them shell on?

Get the shrimp without the shells. I usually get the bag with 50 or so peeled shrimp that range in size from small to medium. If i remember the bag is red in color and will say if they are peeled.

your zebra eel probally won't eat the silversides b/c their natural diet consists mostly of crustaceans ie. shrimp, crabs. and not fish unlike the bigger morays. Zebra eels also like squid, clam. Their diet is very similiar to the snowflake eel.

Well I bought a bag of 45-50/lb shrimp shell on and he took the shrimp with a vengence. About how much should I give him or should I keep offering until he stops showing interest.
Thanks for the help.

The first time I gave my SFE a shrimp I had baught from the fish market instead of just feeding it krill and silversides, it freaked out. It did the take it, spin around and kill it thing. It was so cool. I want to get that on video.
If you are feeding shrimp, the amount will depend on how big they are. I find that mine will be good after 2 if they are about 3 inches. I do cut them in half now, where I didn't the first few times - lets the feeding fun go on a little longer. Your eel should stop taking from you when it is full for that session. Watch its behavior and you will likely notice that about every 3-4 days it will show you it is ready to eat again. Mine comes out and swims around as soon as the lights are on when it is hungry.
Enjoy, eels are just the most awesome fish.

Thanks, Yeah, it was pretty cool watching it fight the dead shrimp. I guess cutting it in half makes sense.
