Eels are pretty easy as long as you have plenty of LR for them to swim through and a tight lid so they don't jump into an overflow or out the back.
Any eel that stays 24" or smaller would be fine.
Your choice will be based on what fish you want to put in with it.
If no fish an aggressive eel like a Fib.
If fish then not a fish eater
If inverts /shrimp then not a shrimp eater
Some eels that come to mind as passive and not aggressive with tankmates.
Snowflake
White Eye
Goldentail
Banana
Golden Dwarf
Wolf eel - Not really an eel, and kind of aggressive
Hope this helps.

Well You have a Few Options..
  • Chestnut Moray (Viper Moray) 13.4 inches max 20g +
  • Dragon Moray (Hawiian Dragon Moray) 31.5 inches max 55g +
  • Chainlink Moray (Chain Moray) 28 inches max 30g +
  • Snowflake Moray (Clouded Moray, Starry Moray) 29.5 inches max 30g +
  • Banded Moray (Ringed Moray, Barred Moray) 23.6 inches max 30g +
  • Zebra Moray 4.9 ft max, rare over 3.3ft (1 meter) 55g +
Whitelip Moray (Lipspot Moray) 19.7 inches max 30g +
Whitemouth Moray (Comet Moray, Guineafowl Moray) 3.9 ft (1.2 meters) 35g +
Goldnetail Moray (Golden Moray) 23.6 inches max 30g +
    Richardsons Moray 12.6 inches 20g +
Ribbon Eel (Black Ribbon Eel, Blue Ribbon Eel) 3.9ft (1.2 meters) 30g + *Difficult To Feed*
I pulled all these right out of my "A pocket expert guid to Marine Fishes" This book is the bible and can be found at borders, barnes and nobles or online books stores. Get yourself one and you may never ask these questions again. Hope this helps and happy tanking

I have extensive knowledge of both (5+ years) and I'd say absolutely not, to either one of those.
Without previous long term experiance, you can just look at the info provided, out of the book and with a little common sense, know that it's rediculous...a Whitemouth Moray, listed at 3.9 feet (by the way, they get bigger), for a 35gal tank?...that's absurd.
Also, I'd have to say no to the Zebra as well.
Other than that, that's a good, well rounded list. Now, the only problem is finding those particular species, because quite a few of them are not common.

Ditto on that.
Also I'd avoid the Ribbon, too many fail to eat and die in captivity. Not an easy eel to keep.

This is a great book. But, I just don't think there is any substitute for feedback by folks who have actually kept these fish. Example: I think most on this forum would say far more than "difficult to feed" when it comes to ribbon eels. These are almost impossible, truly "expert only" fish.
