Sometimes they will turn around for the good. Leave him in there for a bit.

It might be ok. I have heard quite a few stories of people finding their eels out of the tank, putting them back in and the eel living. Good Luck.

This doesn't have anything to do with eels, but I was cleaning my tank out a couple weeks ago, and I pulled out one of the decorations and set it in the sink. After doing my water change, I noticed that my flame angel was missing. Turns out he was hiding in a hole in the decoration. He was out of the water for at least 45 minutes, so I stuck him back in the tank and he's just fine now, haven't had any problems. It's pretty amazing that a fish can go that long without water.

I had a snowflake slither out once. I estimated he had been out a good 45 minutes from how dry he was and all the crud stuck to the body. I gently picked him up and washed him off in fresh water. I threw him back in the tank and almost immediately he shed his mucous coat and was swimming and eating just like normal.

A LFS in town my friend owns had the same 3 foot green moray jump out two different times and live.

i've heard of eel being out of the tank for several hours, look all dried up and then be perfectly fine...eels are pretty hard to kill and they have a mucus layer that helps seal in the moisture if they are out of water for a while...

I don't get it, it absolutely COULDN'T have been out more than an hour, yet, it is definetly dead. It hasn't moved since the "escape" and it's eyes are clouded over. Can someone please tell me what happened?! I have only had it for a week, but I have had eels before and know what is required. If it makes any difference, it was a Zebra Moray Eel about 18in. long and well fed.

A cover is not optional with any eel, well fed or not. It's a painful lesson to learn... sorry for your loss.

actually, i was so hoping it would come back as to wait a whole day, though I knew it was pointless. Oh well, live and learn, and the lesson I have had to learn costed a beautiful eel its life, sad, huh? I knew it could jump out but didn't really expect it as much with the Zebra morays since they are so peaceful and docile.

reefman, i know personalities vary, guess since all of my others were so docile I figured this one would be too, and it was, it just wasn't as content as I had hoped it would be
i ended up keeping it in a little bag for a week to look at (to check for scars or bruises) i found no indication of damage.
What is so sad though, is that now 3 more fish have died, some kind of disease I'm sure. My neon goby died, then my black clownfish, and then my pearlscale butterfly. If any more die, specifically my coral beauty, because it is now the largest fish, or my huge green chromis(also as large) I'll just put 'em all in a 10 gal. and turn my 55gal into an aggressive tank with either a lion or a trigger, probaby either a huma huma trigger or a clown trigger, and maybe a FEW other fish.
