eels/slime/survival after escape

I'm curious. Has anyone ever managed to "save" his/her eel after it liberated itself from the tank? Here's what I mean:
I have read that eels will slime themselves and can survive hours after escaping a tank...and one should always try to "reconstitute" an eel that has gone leaping by placing it back in the tank for a time.
Yea/Nay?

At the LFS I work at they had a SFE jump sometime during the night, found it 5' from the tank. We dropped it into the Back Q tank and it came back fine after a few hours. So it is possible they slime themselves , kinda like lung fish. But not to that extreme. :)

My large SFE has gotten out twice and been out for hours at a time... I just use a towel and put him back in, and he has always been fine afterwards..... they are pretty resilient creatures he should be fine..... word to the wise just don't put your hands near his mouth :)
