egg crate top??????

i have lights on the way and they have feet that hold them up above my tank but with my current hood the light wont get through..i have seen some people on here post about making them out of egg crates....house does this work...and do they mean egg cartons???? if they do wont they melt..please help lights get here monday...not much time to get something on there

Egg crate is a plastic grid material, but I wouldn't use that as a top to an aquarium myself. So no they are not egg cartons.
What exactly is your "hood" now? Flat glass or plastic tops, a wood canopy, what?
