Egg Crate

People use egg crate to cover the tops of their tanks and I use it in my sump to hold filter media.
What it is, it's made as a fluorescents fixture cover. Most hardware stores carry it in their lighting section.

I think you can pretty much use it as you see fit. Some stack their rock on it so thinks can't burrow under the rock and cause a collapse. The possibilities are as varied as the imagination of the individual with the Eggcrates....

So will the eggcrate top affect any of the light flow into the tank and how would it compare to a glass top?

Eggcrate is also commonly used in fragging tanks to support frags, or even for zoos, buttons, etc to grow on to.

Bang said that if you put the thicker side of the eggcrate up it actually gets MORE fluorescent light into your tank. Not sure how it affects halides. I'll put a piece back and forth on my tank in a sec and see...

OK, I just tried it... it LOOKS like it blocks light both thick side up and thin side up. That said, it isn't much difference, and I don't have a PAR meter so I dunno what it it REALLY doing.

I run VHO's.... I guess I'll just stick with my glass top for now. Wax32, I appreciate you doing that test to answer my question. I imagine the eggcrate would be benificial over glass in the way that it will not let the heat build up on top of the water.

So would it be better to put eggcrate over you tank instead of a glass top? Will more light penetrate through the eggcrate than through the glass? Will water splashing through the eggcrate creat more salt crud on my bulbs? Sorry for all the questions.

1) Better to have eggcrate or glass? Usually, better to heve eggcrate...
2) More light will penetrate through eggcrate than dirty glass (salt, dust, condensation)
3) Salt water will create salt crud on your bulbs... why do you even have water spash? Hang On Back filter? Just put a small piece of transparent plastic at those proplematic locations - on top of the eggcrate ...
