eheim 2217 canister filter

Just got one of these and it came with free media. I am assembling it and filling my brand new 65 gallon tank tomorrow. My tank has a built in trickle filter and protein skimmer. I also got an 18w uv sterilizer. My question: the canister came with EMFIMECH and EHFISUBSTRAT, about equal amounts of each. Should I use all the media? The picture shows more EHFISUBSTRAT than EMFIMECH. The EMFIMECH came in 2 bags, and the EMFISUBSTRAT came in 1 bag. Should I use 1 bag of each or all of the medua? Please help so I can fill my tank tomorrow. Thanks!!

Yes, use all the media. If I remember correctly, it goes MECH then the coarse filter pad, then the SUBSTRATE and then the fine filter pad. I think that's how it goes. If you plan to run carbon at any time, that media would go underneath the fine filter pad in a media bag. Don't forget to put some vaseline on the gaskets! It will help to seal it better. thanks, any more input? I will add all the media tonight. The filter did come with a carbon pad, should I use it from the beginning? (I am going to fill the tank tonight)

I'd wait on the carbon. Even then I'd only run it for a weekend and then remove it. Carbon might help with the diatom bloom that you are going to get, though. So it is up to you. As for the spray bar, place it under the water line facing up on a slight angle. This will help to create movement on the suface and will greatly improve the oxygen exchange. HTH--Bob
