Eheim Compact as an External pump?

I'm starting to play around with the idea of implementing a mixing station with auto water changing capabilities. I'm looking at possibly using 2 storage containers, one RO/DI and one for mixing salt. I'm sure most of you who have been around have seen the standard set up with ball valves where one pump is used to do one of 3 jobs:
1. Transport RO/DI to Salt Water container
2. Mix Saltwater
3. Transport Saltwater to Display/Sump
I have an extra Eheim compact 3000 (or will after I move my livestock). I was wondering if anyone had had luck running them out of water. Apparently, according the product description, they can be used as external pumps too. Is this correct?
Would it hold up as well as a dedicated external pump?
I assume you would just connect a input water line to the front using the adapter it comes with and then run it out of the output outlet on the top?

I guess the biggest question you have to answer is what type of head pressure are you talking about.....Depending on the pressure the eheim might not be capable of what your asking.....

I'll only be pushing water about 20"-24" max. I'll actually be using dosing pumps to do a continuous water change each day. I'm thinking about one to one and a half gallons every 24 hours. The pump will only be used for the salt mixing. I think I'll give it a try. I was just wondering if anyone has run one out of the water before. I would think that as long as I keep it wet and primed it should be fine.
