In my 65 FW planted tank yesterday I noticed the temp at 84 deg. First I thought it was the lights, I turned the heaters 2 of them down to 73. Left it came back next morning tank still up in temp 82 or 83 ish. The one heater when I pulled it out of the sump was very hot. The other wasn't. I thought these were good heaters - I am going to try it in a bucket of water. Just wanted everyone to know. Oh yah unplugged the bad heater left the other one in temp 77 tonight.

is this one of the newer eheims or the older ones (6+ years) ago. the new ones seem to get off calibration REALLY easily. i was experiencing crazy temp swings, until i put it on a controller.

My heater is set to 73 and my tank stays a nice 79 degrees. While that doesnt make sense, the heater seems to be working fine.

the heater works perfectly. its their calibration that needs fixing. the older models had a more accurate way of calibrating, but the button to calibrate was hard to flick up, so they the new style which is easy to calibrate, but it seems to get off calibration within a few weeks of calibrating it
i still trust it not to explode in my tank, i just added a controller for extra redundancy.

I can attest to the fact that the new ones stay poorly calibrated. I am going to purchase the reef keeper lite to help combat the problem my self.... Now where does that money come from....... Mothers day fund.........

I don't think this is an issue of calibration, it was working fine since Christmas all of the sudden the temp jumped up 8 degrees. And when I turned it right down it stayed on.

What kind of controller NIKE? I don't see buying a heater and then having to spend a bunch more money on a controller.
I have 2 jagers that I recently purchased, and so far (knock on wood) I have only had to calibrate 1x.....BUT....If there is an INEXPENSIVE controller I may look at one
I know when I buy my titanium heater for the 225G in the fall I will be buying it WITH a controller.....

yehp, same thing happened to me. mine was keeping my tank at a constant 79-80 until one day it jumped 9 degrees and caused alot of my SPS to rtn. i recalibrated, and it stayed on ~80 for around 2.5 weeks then started jumping again (4 degrees). the next day, i got my RKL and it has been 78.5 constant for the past 3-4 weeks. amazing difference

depends what you're looking for. an RKL package is 190$ shipped for pH probe, temp probe, 4 plug connector, and sl1 unit. not bad at all, which is what i got. the 4 plugs control my lights, heater, and fan.
plug uses:
actinics come on at 1:30 and go off at 9:30
daylights come on at 3:45 and go off at 8:00
heater on if <78.5
fan on if >78.5
the is one of the most basic units around that has almost everything needed. if i had money to spend on an apex (500+) to control everything via internet phone. apex is more for a programmer, though its not really hard to program

I did type something, why is it doing this. Excat same thin nike, except I turned mine way down to lowest setting and it still stayed on.

In my research of the RKL stuff, the only reason to get the RKL-1 with the SL-1 unit is if you really really really wanted the pH probe. All of the other benefits it has can be done from the main base unit of the RKL-1. The one thing that wasnt mentioned is the plug in moon light leds. I dont think anyone here would usethem so no worries on not mentioning them.
The RKL-1 comes with temp probe and control the outlet for the heater. There used to be a trade in/trade up program from the manufacturer. Basically it was a "get the RKL-1 now and within a year trade it in for the RKL-3 or an RKE unit and we will give you a discount on the new unit." Check the manufacturers website for their forums for more info.
Yes, the RKL-1 is still on my wish list. I also wish I bought one for myself back around x-mas time when it could be had for $99 + shipping.
