Whats the verdict on elec. MH ballasts?
I am considering a 250w HQI upgrade for my reef and was thinking about an electronic ballast. Like an Ice Cap or something.
I don't know about any exact brand, but I know the electronic ballast runs cooler,eats up less energy, and gives you the flexibility to change bulbs in the future. I think it's a good choice.
I Love mine. I have two IC 250's, no complaints here. They never make the bulbs flicker, and the ballasts don't make any noise. They don't get hot at all, barely warm more like it. I have been nothing but impressed thus far.
Since the HQI's are already stronger than SE's, id rather just get the e-ballasts..youre saving a good amount of electricity between the two too..im getting the double 150 HQI's, and the mag ballasts run 200 watts each.. =(
I would go with magnetic if I didn't care about heat, noise or size. I like the fact that the magnetics drive the bulbs harder which means more PAR per bulb. But since I need a quiet, cool, small ballast I went with IC's and have had no problems.
