We didn't fill ours with anything...just used the charcoal filters and changed them monthly...but we're still beginners, so you'll want to hear from the veterans about that.

I removed the carbon filter media from my two filters and replaced them with nylon stockings filled with live sand (you can use "dead" sand too). Another good idea is to put live rock pieces into the filter.

Capt.; if you put LR pieces in your filter, do you put a light source in there as well?
If the LR doesn't get any type of lighting, would it still flourish as well?

Nope, you don't have to put a light source in there as your aim isn't growing coraline algae, it is using the bacteria and microfauna in the rock to break down detritus.

Sure, you can do it with a canister filter too. Just open it up, remove whatever media is in there and fill the little shelves with broken bits of live rock or sacks full of aragonite sand.
