I'm looking to get rid of my cansiter filter and I was looking into some hang on filters. I was reading into the emperor 400 filter and wanted to know what you guys thought. I'm looking to put it on my 46 gallon.

I have used them on my freshwater tanks with no problems. I do not see any huge problems using them in saltwater tanks other than some people debate if it is ok to run carbon in a saltwater.

I have one on my 30 gallon. I really like it too. It is 400 gph (duh) so it should be great for a 46. If you don't have a fuge, then you can use one of the compartments for cheato and just add a light. They are great for the price too. My lfs was trying to sell one for 75 dollars, but I got it at petsmart (which sucks for most things) for 42 dollars.

I use them on salt and fresh. Sometimes impellar doesn't like to restart on salt tank after a power outage. They can be nitrate traps.

Anything can be a nitrate trap, including a protein skimmer. . .

I've been using a Emperor 280 on my 29 gallon SALTWATER aquarium for over a year and a half... Just depends on what kind of maintenance you do. I clean mine about once a month because over time it slows down as far as water flow is concerned, but a cleaning fixes that problem.
