Hi everybody,
I have a emperor angel who just started changing its color pattern. Can anyone tell me about how long does it take to complete this transformation?

It can take some time. Especially in an aquarium. You have to make sure you are feeding him a proper diet. Sometimes they don't always change to adult colors completely in an aquarium. It might be a year it might be 2 years or it might be never........Just keep the diet as close as you can to what they eat in the wild. Research it I am sure you will find something.

I have had my emperor for 3.5 years. I got him as a 2.5" juvi and he is now 10"+. It took him almost 2.5 years to change and is still coloring up (his horizontal lines are still straightening and his face is getting darker and blue lines are coming in everywhere).
You need to make sure that you are feeding your emperor a variety of foods. My main food is Spectrum pellets, but I feed gel based meat and veggie foods. I feed mysis shrimp, seaweed, and as a snack I feed him silversides and frozen krill.

It does take a lot longer than one year. IMO, the above foods are great; but, IMO, vitamin supplements (like Selcon) really help develop maximum coloration.

I had one of these about 6 years ago and unfortunately I had to give him and my tank away. How big do they get in captivity and what is the recommended minimum sized tank?

I feed him 1 time well and I feed them late night a little to reduce his barking :)
I believe he is from the Indo-Pacific. I am not sure about that though. I wish he would grow a streamer!!!!

As far as how big they get, they will get as big as they can as long as they are fed properly and they are not neglected. I have seen Emperors over 16" in captivity. I will assume my guy will be at that size in 1.5 years or bigger due to the comfort in my new tank!!! Minimum tank size for a full grown emperor would be 180 with minimum fish in with him. I would say if you are buying directly as an adult you would need a 300+. Mine is very active and becoming very aggressive. If I had my 180 for life I would have to give him to the local aquarium because he chases all the other fish.

I have a Bandit Angel, Blueface Angel, Queen angel, Male Blonde Naso, Naso Tang, and a niger trigger.
I have had the blueface and the trigger with the emperor for around 2 years and the naso for about 1.5 years.
The Queen angel and the male blonde naso were added about 6-8 months ago.
The 3" bandit was added about 3 weeks ago.
