Does it bother anyone else when you hear the term African-American, Asian-American, etc ? Can't we all just be Americans? It is clearly spelled out in our founding principles & reflected in our laws that we are all equal without regard to race. Yet some folks are referred to in this way whose families were born & lived here for many generations. Some of my own ancestral relatives came from Italy. I have an Italian last name, yet I don't run around calling myself Italian-American. To me that sounds quite dumb & pointless. All this PC crap riles me. Okay, rant over.

Oh I'm fully in support of that! We had an article run in our local newspaper a few weeks ago about how Steelers tickets are too expensive for African-Americans...ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!? THAT really set me off!

I think those classicifcations should only apply to people who, themselves, have immigrated here and then became US citizens(not their ancestors 100x removed). For example: If you immigrate here from Africa and then become a US citizen you are an African-American. That would make alot more sense. I think it's quite silly though, to refer to someone who has never even been to Africa before, as an African-American, they should just be called American.

Lets not forget Native American....
Yep, I agree, we are just all Americans, living in the most culturally enriched and diverse country in the world.

Usually while very proud to be Americans, immigrants are also proud of their homeland, so I feel they have the right to have that acknowledged. If however, you were born here in the US and have never even set foot in Africa(or whatever country applies) in your life, you should just be referred to as an American.

And then on top of it they scream prejudice everytime we exclude them when they're excluding themselves. JUST BE AMERICAN!

Sure we could, but ethnic titles are inherently divisive and politicians like it that way, truth be told. If we were all just "Americans", there would be no population segments for politicians to pander to.
Remember divide and conquer? easier that way

I totaly agree with that. I also like to think of people as Americans opposed to Democrats or Republicans or Independents.

I cannot say that it bothers me. If someone prefers to be called one thing I don't find it too difficult to humor then.

As the mother of 4 children of differant races, I dont call them my mexican/native/cauc child, or my haitain/cauc child, or my chinese child, Just my children. I agee we need to drop the titles.

I agree as well. The titles need to be dropped. We are all American.
And to the person who made the comment about football tickets being too expensive for the average American,
I agree.

So...all of us, on any upcoming applications, doctor's forms, etc., when asked "race", just draw a new box at the bottom, check it off, and write in "AMERICAN".
One time I drew a new box on the "s e x" line, made a new box, and wrote in "when possible". Nurse never questioned it

I invite all of you to come participate in the 7+ page thread on the "republican" nominees. We're currently discussing this.

And why do we have to press "1" for English ? This irritates me to no end !!! If you can't understand our language, learn how !! I say we change it to Press "1" for Spanish, "2" for Russian/Bosnian, 3 for Vietnamese, etc ...

Unfortunately, you are all dillusional...
as long as there is a "minority status" in america, people are going to be classified as what minority they are. Get rid of all the minority protection laws, get rid of the benefits to being a minority, and then you'll get rid of the minority titles.
