Eshopps cube sump

It comes with a micron bag....I have never used one of these before. In my old system I started with bio balls then switched to live rock in the sump because the bio balls were trapping nitrates and phosphates.

What are these micron bags intended for? Do I run the same risk as I had before with this bag? Do you put anything in the bag? Or do you clean the bag and how often?

Sorry 10 questions

They're just like filter socks. They are intended to catch particulate matter. If you don't clean them out 1-2 times per week then yes, whatever they catch will break down and release nitrate and phosphate back into the system.

I don’t use filter socks mostly because they are a pain to clean. Once in a while I do put one on, like if I stir up a bunch of muck.

That's basically what I use them for is polishing the water from time to time.

However, I will give eshopps credit for their design on those cubes. The refugium gets unfiltered water and the filter bag/sock only filters the water going to the protein skimmer chamber. These are both benefits if you ask me.

Adding carbon will typically hinder protein skimmer production. But it also has it's uses for helping to polish/clean the water from time to time.

I think I'd try out the bag and see how it does since it's somewhat user friendly to remove.
