Hi all just thought it would be a different take on the hobby to write an article about the history of pico, not nano reefs. Most of the literature on small tanks stops at 2.5 gallons and below formally, so the web forums are the only place to find information on truly small tanks other than a passing mention in nano reef articles.
I was able to speak with some very neat people in researching this, one of them was a notable marine biologist and traveler who has been studying and keeping captive nano/pico reefs for nearly 30 years. Most of the article explains some of my observations with gallon tanks as I was trying to show long term gallon tanks can be ran as stable as any larger reef with a few adjustments to salinity control and timing of events in maintenance
Its just cool to see where all this web forum business began, for example as recently as 2001 most sites had no nano forum, and none had a pico forum. I believe the first pico reef related thread grouping was in 01 or 02, so this is relatively new and that's also unique in science, you know nothing new under the sun and all...
hope you like it
