I have my new 5.5 gallon up and running. It has 40watts of PC over it, so that almost 8 watts per gallon. I'd like to try an open brain. Would it do ok under these lights? Does it need to be fed? If so what?

IMO it depends,,put it in the sand or on the bottom ina lower flow area, they are a relitivly meoderate light coral( depending on the lighting) some people say they need strong lightign some say they need lower lighting..They also say that the red open brains require less light than the greens..they are filters feeders by night and extend their "arms" to feed, they are also a photosynthic coral as well so feeding isnt required , i would give mine a squirt of cyclopeeze or it would catch some mysis shrimp every once and awhile and seemed extremely happy with it, although it wasnt neccassary
i had mine under halides..

not mean at all..
most books, searches, owners etc. seem to have their different opinions.. moderate light moderate flow is what ive always kept mine in and ive never had one die, only grow and strive, and these have been my observations with others that keep them..
"Lighting: Requires moderate to strong lighting. As noted above, the red variants may require less light than the green variety.
Water Current:Open Brain corals prefer low to moderate water flow for optimum polyp extension.. " ---Taken from a popular book..

i think i will try a small one. it will be under brand new 40 watt bulb on the sand. since its only 5.5g it won't be far from the light at all. if it doesn't look so good, i'll find it a new home.

I have a red lobo brain and favia under 96 watt pcs on a 10 gallon, only half of which is 10K so that's almost 5 watts per gallon, I would say you'll be fine with one of those but I've never kept a trachyphilla. They are in lower flow, I also have branching lobo under a 70 watt halide in moderate flow.
