Explain the Iodine Dip to Me

Can someone elaborate on this iodine dip for corals? What sorts of "badness" does the dip prevent. Ich? Flatworms? Brook? ???
Also, doesnt this process harm the corals?
Is there a reliable brand that you would recommend?

An iodine dip doesn't really prevent anything that I know of, it's an antiseptic that can sometimes help corals that already have infections. Some people do iodine dips with new corals before they add them to their tanks, but I'm not sure how useful it is as a preventative measure. It might cause some parasites like flatworms to fall off, but it won't do anything about ich or brooklynella, as these are fish diseases.

if you dip sps in an iodine dip then you are preventing a lot of pests.....if you put enough iodine to saltwater ratio then it will kill almost any pest...i dip all my sps corals and have never had any pests!

not really. an iodine dip is going to rid corals of red bugs, AEFW, or monit eating nudis. i used to dip in iodine, but its just a waste imo. the only thing that really comes off is mini brittles and copepods. both of which id rather have in my tank than dead.
the best thing you can do IMO besides qt is visually inspect your corals. unless you have another dip like an interceptor dip or something for acros.

Iodine dips will work against AEFW and various coral-eating nudis, but not against their eggs. I just used a second dip several days later to get babies once they hatch.

I use TMPCC and it works great. Kills flatworms, pods, bristleworms, snails, starfish, etc. I always dip when i get a new frag in as you don't want any pest in your display. As for pods they multiply fast and i add tigger pods so i know what is in my system.

Would you dip Mushrooms and Zoas in this? Are there just directions on the bottle that you follow or do you do a certain water to dip ratio? Do you do dips in just ro water too? or just one or the other? Thanks (i know a lot of questions...)

im pretty sure iodine only stuns the red bugs. i wouldnt trust just an iodone dip on sps corals.

you can dip shrooms and zoas. theres directions on the bottles. usually i do about 10-15 drops in 1/2 a pint of tank water and let 'em sit for 15 mins.

Yeah, I've never had any luck getting rid of red bugs with iodine, and the dips only work for other things (ie flatworms, etc.) if you get them all off during the dip, correct?
A few people in the reef club here in NYC have been experimenting with diluted hydrogen peroxide solutions as a way of getting rid of a host of pests. They are still experimenting, but have had some good results, so I'm hoping they will post some more detailed results soon.

I think you use it more for sps corals than lps because of the common bugs they get it as well as other diesease.

Okay, so it sounds like concensus is that iodine dips are not that wonderful. I think I would only bother with it if it would kill protozoan parasites like ich and brook....
I have never even heard of redbugs and such...Do they mostly infest the hard corals? All I have right now are mushrooms and button polyps (only corals that survived the crash in may). I guess I prefer the soft corals anyways.... THanks for the input everyone!

I feel that the dip does no harm and potentially does some good. What I do...dip for 10 minutes, place in QT tank for 3 weeks, dip again just before going into DT.
