external overflow?

I just bought an amiracle overflow. This is the first time I have used an overflow on a tank. I just set it up, and the directions arent really clear. The back container, the one that sits outside the tank has two chambers. One that has a sponge filter, that goes to down to the sump, and the other that I assume the water goes into first fills up, and then drains into the chamberthat has the sponge. Do I just sit the U tube into the two boxes or does it have to be secured. Do you guys use the sponge filter or run it without it? The tank is not filled yet. Any help would be greatly app. thanks, ricky

Your assumption is correct... as far as the baffle arrangement in the overflow box. This is to insure you do not break the siphon in case of power outage or just shutting the pump down for tank maintenance.
The tube just sits there straddling the tank edge, no securing needed.
I would recommend using the sponge.... good prevention of a possible clogging of your overflow by a build up of just plain junk if you will.... just rinse it out every so often or when you do a water change.
