Facebook.... what is this all about???

I'm just not getting something here. Several months ago, my brother in law told me about this great site that he uses for professional networking, etc. He raved about this Facebook thing so I went on and checked it out. I signed up for a profile and looked around. I really didn't see anything interesting or useful about the site so I just forgot about it.
Then he "poked" me and wrote on my "wall"... what is this nonsense. I ignored it and since then I never go on except when I get an email about being added to this or that. I had an ex try to add me as a friend (which I had to reject... I don't need drama). I had an old friend who I haven't seen in over 20 years add me as a friend... what do you do with that? And I had a guy who I see every week add me as a friend. By now I have a few other "friends" who are really not people I talk to much in my real life. WHAT ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THIS SITE?
Finally, today I got invited by one of my "friends" to play a game called "Mob Wars" I accepted the invitation because I don't want to be rude but I have no idea what it is.
Why do people do this?
Is it rude if I start just rejecting any request/poking/writing or anything else?
I think I'm just missing something with the whole Facebook appeal.

it was meant for college students
but it has gone down hill since they let everyone on
it was better when there were not attachment things..
but yea go ahead and reject people..its starting to turn into myspace tho

Yeah, it's sorta like myspace. I hate both but have a myspace presence only because a friend of mine bugged me to get on so I could meet some friends of hers. I never go on there these days, it's kinda annoying.

i did the Facebook thing in college. I keep it now to keep in touch with a lot of my old HS and college friends that moved to various parts of the world and just to keep up with what's going on with everyone. Even in today's society it's very difficult to get in touch with people or send emails but Facebook allows you to create "events" (parties, graduations, etc) and invite large groups of people instead of calling or snail mailing invites. also reconnected with a lot of people I haven't spoke to in a long time...

I'm not on Facebook, but I am on Myspace. I think its a great tool to keep in touch with people. Since joining I have been able to get back in touch with some old friends from high school that I hadnt seen in 15 years and had no idea where in the world they were these days.

I haven't joined either one. I'm on Classmates and Reunion and if I really want to get in touch with someone from the past I can find them one way or the other. Both MySpace and even now FaceBook are starting to get a bad wrap because of pedofiles etc.
I don't have time to hang around those sites, my life takes way too much of my time. I see them being used by younger people more.

I agree with you. I got on myspace just to see what it was all about too. All I got was daily p-o-r-n solicitations. It was stupid and then I had to jump through hoops to get them to cancel my profile. At least Facebook does not have the crap that myspace does.

You get thrown out of Facebook if you have too many friends. 2 Finnish celebs were thrown out for having a few thousand friends... no explanations, just banned.

I have facebook, but I'm in college and moved across the US to go to school so I think it's awesome to stay in touch.

I used it alot in college to keep up with what was going on. And now with family all over the globe we use it to keep in touch. That and randomly I run across people I haven't seen in years. And say hi, these are the ones you liked but not enough to go see in person.
